What is Lexapro? |
Lexapro is the brand name of Ezcitalopram which is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Lexapro affects the chemicals in the brain which may become unbalanced and cause anxiety or depression. Hence it is used in the treatment of major depression disorder, anxiety disorder. This drug may enhance the sedative effects of alcohol.

Lexapro Warnings |
Special precautions should be taken in case of mania, seizure disorders, or any work requiring mental alertness e.g. operating hazardous machinery including automobiles, severe renal impairment, and hepatic impairment.
There is every possibility of suicidal thoughts or behaviors at the starting of the treatment with Lexapro, an antidepressant drug. The chance of suicidal activity is mainly under the age of 18 years. Hence special monitoring is required when one is under the medication of this drug.
Lexapro is not recommended to be taken together with monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate).
Lexapro should be started at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI.
Lexapro will not be prescribed by the doctor or the adjustment of the dosage will be done if one is suffering from liver or kidney disease, seizures or epilepsy, bipolar disorder (manic depression).
Lexapro is not suggested in case of pregnancy as it may be harmful to an unborn baby.
It also not recommended for the nursing mother as the drug may pass into breast milk which may affect the infant.

Lexapro Dosage |
The dosage of Lexapro is like 10 mg once daily and may be increased if necessary to 20 mg once daily.
The drug should be taken exactly as directed by the physician. It should not be taken in larger amounts or for a longer period of time.
The dose of lexapro should be taken at the same time every day.
The dosage should be taken with a glass full of water.
The liquid form of this drug should be measured with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup and not with a regular table spoon to get the correct dosage.
The drug should be stored at room temperature at places which is moist and heat free.

Lexapro - Missed Dose |
The missed dose should be taken immediately when one remembers. But incase if one remembers at the time of the scheduled next dose than he or she should skip the missed dose and in no circumstance should take double dose to cover up the missed dose.

Lexapro - Overdose |
In case of overdose one may experience the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, tremor, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, coma, seizures, and tremor. If any of the said symptoms are experienced by the patient as a result of overdose then he or she should immediately consult his or her doctor to get the correct treatment.

Side Effects of Lexapro Drug |
The common side effects which one may experience while under the medication of Lexapro are:
Nausea
Diarrhea
Increased sweating
Insomnia
Impotence
Ejaculation disorder
Fatigue
Somnolence
Allergic Reaction like Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, skin rashes, breathing difficulty.
Mood changes
Anxiety
Panic attacks
Irritability
Thoughts of suicide or hurting himself or herself.
Some of the less serious side effects are:
Feeling nervous, restless, or unable to sit still
Drowsiness and dizziness
Changes in weight
Decreased sex drive
Dry mouth
Ringing in ears
One should immediately consult his or her doctor when experiencing the above said side effects.

Withdrawal Symptoms of Lexapro |
Anyone discontinuing Lexapro suddenly runs the risk of suffering from withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, nausea, fatigue, headache, gait instability and insomnia.
Hence it is suggested to consult with the doctor and stop the medication gradually as per the advise of the doctor. | |
