What is Effexor?

Effexor is the trade name of venlafaxine which is in a class of anti manic drugs. It is used in the treatment of depression and extended release there by indicating for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. It, in humans, is believed to be associated with its potential of neuro transmitter activity in the central nervous systems (CNS). It affects the chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic or anxiety.

Precautions with Effexor

Special precautions should be taken in seizures, mania and with disease or conditions that could affect haemodynamic responses or metabolism.
Effexor is not at all recommended if one is under the medication of monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) like isocaboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil) selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days from the date of starting the medication.
One should be monitored for worsening symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts during the first week of treatment of Effexor.
Family members or other care givers should be alert to one’s changes in mood or symptoms.
Effexor is not suggested or recommended by the doctors if one is suffering from the below mentioned diseases:
Kidney disease
Manic depression
Cirrhosis or other liver disease
A family or history of suicidal thoughts or actions
High blood pressure
Seizures or epilepsy
Glaucoma
Blood clotting disorder
High cholesterol
Effexor tablets are not at all recommended for lactating mother as it may pass into breast milk thus affecting the nursing baby.
Effexor may be harmful to pregnant ladies hence is not recommended.

Effexor Dosage

The dosage is divided into two categories. First in case of depression it is seventy five mg per day administered in two or three divided doses or as a single dose. Whereas in case of generalized anxiety disorder it is seventy five mg per day administered in a single dose.
Above all the dose of effexor should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
This drug is not at all recommended to take in large amounts; neither it is recommended for a longer time.
Each dose of effexor should be taken with water and also can be taken with food.
Effexor tablets should be swallowed in whole without crushing or chewing.
Effexor tablets should be taken at the same time every day.
The capsules may be administered by carefully opening the capsule and sprinkling the entire contents on a spoon and then swallowing the mixture without chewing followed with a glass of water to ensure complete swallowing of the mixture.
Effexor tablets or capsules should be stored at room temperatures in places which are moist and heat free.

Effexor - Missed Dose

The missed dose should be immediately taken when remembered but if it is time for the next scheduled dosage then the missed dose should be skipped and not to be taken doubly in any circumstances.

Effexor - Overdose

Overdose of Effexor may include symptoms like dizziness, nausea, numbness, sleepiness or tingling in hand and feet.
If any of the above stated symptoms are experienced by individuals then he or she has to consult with the doctor on an emergency basis to avoid any further intricacies.

Possible Side effects of Effexor

The following side effect of effexor is nausea, headache, asthenia, sweating, dizziness, insomnia, drowsiness, low blood pressure, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction

Withdrawal Symptoms of Effexor

One should consult the doctor before discontinuing Effexor. Stopping Effexor may cause discontinuation effects including agitation, anxiety, anorexia, coordination impairment, dry mouth, confusion, diarrhea, dizziness, dysphoric mood, fasciculation, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, nervousness, nightmares, hypomania, nausea, sweating, tremors, somnolence, vertigo, and vomiting.
