What is Diflucan?

Diflucan the trade name of the group called fluconazole which is an antifungal medication. It is a bis-triazole anti fungal drug and is structurally related to Imidazole derivative. It is fungi static in action and exerts its antifungal activity by altering cellular membranes resulting in increased membrane permeability, and impaired uptake of precursor molecule (example purine and pyrimidine precursors to DNA). This is mainly used in systematic candidiasis, mucosal candidiasis cryptococcosis, vaginal candidiasis, fungal infections impatience with malignancy.

Precautions with Diflucan

Special precautions should be taken for patients with liver dysfunction and immuno compromised patients. In pediatric case the dose should be necessarily reduced. It is not advisable for infants below 4 weeks. In pregnancy it may affect the foetus. In lactation it is also not advisable because the drug passes into breast milk.
Diflucan are not at all suggested or prescribed to those who are taking cisapride (Propulsid). Together with cisapride (Propulsid) Diflucan may cause serious, even fatal, heart problems.
While taking Diflucan if one experiences skin rashes then he or she should immediately inform his or her doctor as in some rare cases it has resulted even in death.
During the course of Diflucan if one experiences the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, jaundice, dark urine or clay colored stools then he or she should immediately inform and consult about the symptoms with a doctor as in rare cases the drug has caused severe liver damage resulting in death.

How would be the dosage of Diflucan?

The dosages of diflucan are as follows:
In case of oropharyngeal or lesophageal candidiasis it is 200 mg on the first day followed be 100 mg once daily. The maximum dose can be 400 mg per day.
In case of vaginal candidiasis it is like 150 mg once oral dose.
In case of Deep seated candidiasis it is 400 mg on first day then 200 mg once daily for 4 weeks and for at least 2 weeks after resolution of symptoms.
In case of cryptococeal meningitis it is 400 mg on first day followed by 200 mg once daily. The maximum dose can be 400 mg per day for 10-12 weeks. Thereafter 200 mg once daily.
In case of neutropenic cancer it is 50-100 mg daily.
But above all the drug should be taken exactly as directed by the doctor.
Each dose of diflucan should be taken with a glass full of water.
Diflucan be taken regularly to get the most benefit.  
Before measuring a dose the suspension should be shake well and then be measured in a dose measuring spoon or cup and not in a regular table spoon to ensure to get the correct dose.
Tablets and capsules of Diflucan should be stored at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
The suspension may be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator but it should not freeze.
Any suspension which is unused for more than 14 days should be thrown away immediately.

Diflucan - Missed Dose

In case a dose is missed then one should take the missed dose immediately when remembered but if it time for the next scheduled dose then the missed dose should be skipped and in no circumstances double dose should be taken to fill up the gap of missed dose.

Diflucan - Overdose

In case of overdose one may experiences the symptoms like hallucination, decreased movement, tearing eyes, decreased breathing, paranoia, urinary incontinence, seizures and death.
Hence in that case one should immediately seek the consultation of his or her doctor.

Diflucan side effects

The possible side effects are as follows:
Nausea
Headaches
Skin rash
Abdominal Pain
Vomiting

Withdrawal Symptoms of Diflucan

Stopping suddenly after consuming for a long time may lead to withdrawal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headaches and dizziness.
