What is Clonazepam?

Clonazepam belongs to the class of anti convulsant drug. It affects the chemicals in the brain which may become unbalanced and may cause seizures or panic disorders. It reduces excitability of neurons to decrease the amplitude of electrical activity from normal and secondary epileptogenic limbic tissues. Clonazepam also suppresses the spread of epileptitorum discharges.

Clonazepam Warnings

Special precaution should be taken and alcohol should be avoided fully during the treatment as alcohol increases the risk of having seizure. One should be cautious while performing hazardous activity, driving or operating machinery as clonazepam causes dizziness.
Clonazepam can cause physical and psychological dependencies as it is very much habit forming drug hence in taking of this drug for a longer period is not at all advised by the physician.
Clonazepam should be avoided for all those who are having liver disease, kidney disease or suffering from asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis.
Clonazepam is harmful for those females who are pregnant as it affects the foetus.
Lactation is not at all recommended during the treatment with Clonazepam.

How one should take Clonazepam?

According to individual age and clinical response the doses for infants and children are 0.01 to 0.03 mg per kg body weight daily thrice or four times divided dose. The dose can be increased to 0.25-0.5 mg per kg per day till a maximum of 0.2 mg per kg body weight per day. Initially adults can be given 1.5 mg per day and increased by 0.5 mg per day. The maximum dose can be up to 20 mg daily whereas the maintenance dose is 4-8 mg daily. Thought the proportionate is mentioned above but still the said medicine should be taken as per the physician’s instruction and direction.
The oral drug should be taken with a glass full of water and it should be swallowed fully.
The clonazepam orally-disintegrating drug can be taken without water. The tablet should be placed on the tongue immediately upon opening the blister. After opening from the blister the tablet must be immediately taken and should not be kept for later use. Since the tablet disintegrates rapidly in the mouth hence it can be easily swallowed with or without liquid.
The clonazepam drug should always be stored at room temperature at places which are moist and heat free.
To get the fullest benefit of this medicine one should take clonazepam drug regularly.

Clonazepam- Missed Dose:

The missed dose should be immediately taken when remembered but if it is time to take the next dose then the missed drug should be skipped. In no circumstances double dose should be taken to fill up the gap of the missed drug.

Clonazepam - Overdose :

If overdose of this particular medicine happens then the person having this medicine may have on e of the following symptoms like slow heart beat, drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, confusion, difficulty in walking and talking and may be unconscious. His/her appearance will be like a drunken person.

Side effects of Clonazepam

One under the medication of clonazepam, if experience any of the below mentioned serious and mild side effects then he/she should immediately consult his/her physician so to get the correct treatment for the side effects. The drug should be immediately stopped and may start to continue after consulting the physician.
