What is Alprazolam? |
Alprazolam is a triazolo analogue of benzodiazepine and its primary role is to treat the complications or the health disorders that are related to anxiety. The primary role of this drug is to have a dose related depressant effect on the central nervous system, which can vary from mild impairment of task performance to hypnosis. The main functional area of Alprazolam is to be in charge of the chemicals of the human brain which when becomes unbalanced lead to the problems of anxiety.
Therefore Alprazolam is directed by the physician to alleviate anxiety, nervousness and tension associated with anxiety disorders.
Therefore Alprazolam is effective in reducing the sudden excitement of the brain and for a while provides relief from symptoms of anxiety and has also been found effective in treating the anxiety that is consequent to depression.
However Alprazolam use can also give rise to hypersensitivity to benzodiazepine type of drugs and in some cases there have been incidences of acute angle glaucoma in patients.

Precautions to be taken while taking Alprazolam: |
Drowsiness can rule supreme while an individual is persuading this drug so during the course of this medication it is better to keep off from activities like driving or operating machineries or any other jobs that involves risks.
Use of alcohol should also be avoided during the medication period.
The effectiveness of Alprazolam shows gradually so it is always advisable to swallow the drug as a whole instead of chewing it.
There have been incidences where the use of Alprazolam has formed into a habit so unless the physician advises to go for it the drug should not be taken.
Alprazolam should not be taken by people who are suffering from any one or more of these complications, narrow-angle glaucoma, kidney disease, asthma, bronchitis, amphysema and liver disease.
Alprazolam should not be taken by pregnant women and those who are breast feeding as it may be hazardous for the unborn or the newborn child.
The dosage of Alprazolam is required to be altered in case of elderly people and this drug is debarred from use to the children.
Persons who are already on C.N.S depressants and also have to take Alprazolam should follow special precautions. |
Alprazolam Dosage |
One thing should always be borne in mind that the Alprazolam should taken only as directed by the physician and in usual cases the initial doses are 0.25-0.5mg three times daily. The maximum dosage can be up to 3-4mg daily but with divided doses.
It is generally recommended that Alprazolam should be consumed with a full glass of water and never should it be chewed or break the extended-release form alprazolam.
Special care must be taken so that the patient pursuing on Alprazolam should not over indulge into it other than the recommended dosage as then this may become addictive.
Avoidance of heat and moisture should be of prime importance while this drug is stored.
Incase a dose is missed by a person then it should be taken as soon as it is remembered.
By any chance if the missed dose is recollected later then it is best to skip the same and should never be taken with the scheduled dose. This is because the double dosage can be hazardous.
If there is an over dosage of Alprazolam then the person may exhibit any one or more of these symptoms, confusion, dizziness, a slow heart beat, difficulty in breathing and his overall appearance may give the impression of a drunkard. In such cases immediate medical attention is mandatory and if required the medication may also be required to change.

Side Effects of Alprazolam |
Amongst the potentially hazardous side effects of Alprazolam are sores in the mouth or throat, rash in skins and yellowing in skin and eyes, severe confusion, memory impairment, an allergic reaction which will lead to difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face and lips or tongue. In cases where either of these symptoms is present in a person immediate medical counseling is a must. There are also some mild side effects, which may include drowsiness, clumsiness, vivid dreams, nausient amnesis, loss of coordination, musculo skeletal, weakness etc.
